A new national holiday, the Day of Abai, has been introduced in Kazakhstan, Toppress.kz correspondent reports citing the Prime Minister’s official website.
The government introduced amendments to the law “On Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan,” adding August 10 as the Day of Abai. The decree comes into force after the day of its first official publication, the statement says.
In 2020, Kazakhstan celebrates the 175th anniversary of Abai Kunanbayev, the great Kazakh poet, writer, philosopher, composer and translator. He is the founder of Kazakh written literature and a cultural reformer who called for the rapprochement of Asian and European cultures based on enlightened Islam.
According to the Julian calendar, Abai Kunanbayev was born on August 10, 1845, while according to the Gregorian calendar his date of birth is August 23, 1845.
