On June 12, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree setting August 12, 2020, as the date for Senate elections, Toppress.kz correspondent reports.
The elections are called due to the expiration of senators’ constitutional term of office in October 2020.
“The Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, akims (mayors) of the cities of Nur-Sultan, Almaty and Shymkent, and other regions should take measures to ensure organizational, logistical and financial support of the Senate elections. The Decree comes into force on the date of its publication,” the decree says.
Kazakhstan’s Senate is composed of elected members that represent each of 14 regions, two cities of “national significance” (Almaty and Shymkent), as well as Nur-Sultan. In addition, 15 deputies of the Senate are appointed by the President in order to ensure representation of national, cultural and other significant interests of society. The term of Senate deputies’ office is six years.
